Liam's experience with drug and alcohol addiction

Drug and alcohol addiction

Liam* contacted Frontline Make Change in need of support after struggling with a chronic alcohol and cocaine problem. His issue had led to the loss of his job, the breakdown of his relationship and near homelessness.

Over a number of years, Liam had become dependent on alcohol and began taking cocaine after his alcohol dependency increased.

Taking steps towards recovery

His first step in the recovery process was to call Frontline to arrange a consultation and discuss the available options. Liam’s addiction support worker put together a care plan for him. Through this they identified that a residential treatment programme was Liam’s preferred choice.

While waiting for a bed to become available, weekly key working support sessions were made available to Liam. Additional supports were put in place to support his family members that were affected by the issues. GP appointments were encouraged for health screening and a referral to MABS for financial advice was set up.

The recovery process

Once Liam completed residential treatment, a two-year aftercare plan was put in place. Liam has made huge progress with his recovery and is now back in full time employment, has returned to the family home and the relationships that were previously fractured are healed and healthy.
