A gambling habit that became compulsive

The issues and concerns that clients come to Frontline with can range from drug and alcohol problems to a gambling habit that has become problematic.

Padraig* reached out to Frontline for support after his gambling addiction escalated during the pandemic.

Padraig’s compulsive gambling had reached a point where he was placing bets multiple times a day and spending more than he earned. He had accumulated substantial debts from loans he had taken out to spend on gambling. “What had once seemed like just a bit of fun had sucked me into what felt like an unbreakable habit.”

His compulsive gambling had a hugely negative effect on both his mental health and relationships with his partner and family and he feared losing his job because of the many days of work he was missing due to the stress he was under.

Taking steps towards recovery

The first step in Padraig’s recovery was contacting Frontline and making an appointment. At a one-to-one keyworking session with an addiction practitioner, Padraig decided that a residential treatment programme was his preferred treatment option, and he was referred for a 12-week programme. Frontline helped manage the process of finding an available bed in the programme and once it was completed, Padraig engaged with a 1-year aftercare programme.

Padraig’s family members were referred for family support as an extension of care and support during his recovery.

Padraig’s current situation

Padraig is in the process of rebuilding his personal relationships. He is also repaying the substantial debts he accumulated at the height of his gambling addiction. His mental well-being and self-esteem have improved, and he has returned to work. Padraig is utilising the awareness that he gained during his keyworking sessions and residential experience to maintain and build on his ongoing recovery.
