From recovery to employment

Mark’s experience from recovery to employment is an example of the determination and hard work involved in building a meaningful future. With the right support, opportunities and encouragement, Mark has been able to take steps towards the future he had hoped for, while recognising that everyone’s journey with addiction and recovery is different.

COMMUNITY DETOX

Mark first reached out for support in 2025. He had struggled with heroin addiction for many years and, in more recent years, had been prescribed methadone. He subsequently successfully detoxed from methadone through a community detox programme. Following this, Mark wanted to ensure he had the support in place to continue living a drug-free lifestyle and to start making plans for his future.

STABILISATION PROGRAMME

Initially, Mark joined our 12-week Connections programme. The programme focuses on four key areas of development: stabilisation, health (personal and mental), personal development and progression, and choices. Participants meet in a group setting four days a week and receive one-to-one support once a week throughout the programme. As part of the programme, participants also have the opportunity to identify what they would like their next steps to be once they complete it. For some, this can involve starting a Community Employment (CE) Programme, while for others, it can mean returning to education or re-entering the workforce.

PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE

From the beginning, Mark had identified that his number one goal was to get back into work. As a result, his keyworker introduced him to Careers Edge – a pre-employment and progression programme designed to support individuals in recovery from substance use as they move towards employment, education or training.

Through Careers Edge, Mark began a period of work experience. His dedication and hard work during this time paid off, and he successfully secured a full-time position with the company.

Alongside these achievements, peer support has also played an important role in Mark’s recovery journey. He has received ongoing support through SMART Recovery meetings, as well as a social group that he attends for people in recovery. These connections have provided Mark with additional support as he continues to build a positive and fulfilling life in recovery.

Mark’s journey demonstrates the importance of having the right support in place and how setting personal goals, developing new skills and building positive connections can help create opportunities for the future.
