Summary
Frontline’s Summer Children’s Project provides vulnerable families with vital respite and gives children access to unforgettable, confidence-building experiences that support wellbeing, recovery, and long-term resilience.

The summer project has long been a cornerstone of Frontline’s childcare service – the Children’s Project. For many years, it has opened doors to experiences the children may never otherwise have the chance to enjoy, while also offering essential periods of respite.
Children attending the project come from some of the most vulnerable families in our community, many living with the daily realities of parental or familial addiction. More than 15 years ago, it became clear that parents in recovery were struggling to attend vital appointments due to a lack of childcare support. The Children’s Project was created to meet that need – and has grown into so much more.

When selecting activities for the summer project, the team works with intention. Their aim is always to create moments that are memorable, exciting, and horizon-broadening. Every trip and every workshop is chosen to give children access to experiences often out of reach due to social disadvantage or financial barriers.
This year, generous funding from Community Foundation Ireland opened the door to an incredible array of activities. The children enjoyed a visit to an alpaca farm in Wicklow, explored the DSPCA animal shelter in Rathfarnham, spent a day at Fort Lucan, and embarked on a five-day adventure at Carlingford Adventure Centre. These experiences were not just fun – they were unforgettable.
The Lasting Impact of New Experiences
The impact of opportunities like these is profound. The memories formed during these days stay with the children for years, helping to nurture a sense of possibility, confidence, and belonging -vital building blocks in positive childhood development.
Respite plays an equally important role. It gives parents and caregivers the breathing space they need to focus on their own wellbeing, reconnect with their recovery goals, and reduce the overwhelming stresses of daily life. Meanwhile, the children enjoy a safe, supportive environment away from the pressures they face at home, allowing them to simply be children.
The annual trip to Carlingford has always been a highlight, and this year was no exception. The children took part in activities that were both challenging and exhilarating – sea swimming, sailing, archery, and a variety of adventure tasks that strengthened their resilience, teamwork, and self-belief.

For parents, this break often marks a turning point. With time and space to regroup, they return to family life with renewed energy, improved routines, and a clearer sense of stability. These benefits ripple far beyond the duration of the trip, supporting long-term recovery and strengthening family resilience.
A Child’s Journey of Growth and Self-Belief
One young girl’s story captures the true essence of what respite can do. Typically quiet and reluctant to try new things, she often hung back during group activities. But in Carlingford, something shifted. Supported by staff and encouraged by her peers, she volunteered for everything – sea swimming, pier jumping, sailing, archery. Each evening, she phoned her mother, bursting with pride as she shared her achievements.
Since returning home, the change in her has been unmistakable: increased confidence, a willingness to participate, and a newfound excitement for trying new things. Her journey is a powerful reminder of the resilience within every child – and how the right environment can help it emerge.
As we reflect on another successful summer project, we are reminded that these experiences are far more than activities on a calendar – they are lifelines of hope, growth, and connection. For children, they spark joy, bravery, and memories that last a lifetime. For families, they offer much-needed space to heal, regroup, and rebuild. None of this would be possible without the dedication of the Children’s Project team and the generosity of our funders and supporters. Together, we are creating brighter paths for children and families who need them most, one meaningful moment at a time.
